About Dennis…

Growing up in the Saint Louis area I was always an avid music fan and spent a lot of time collecting and listened to music. My interest in playing music started in my pre-teen years as I tried my hand at playing the drums and jamming with friends. A few years later during my early teens I got my first guitar and spent many hours each day teaching myself to play guitar.

After many years of playing in bands as a guitarist and vocalist, I develop enough skill to start performing as a soloist.

The St. Louis and St. Charles metropolitan area has a great live music scene with a large number of talented solo acoustic guitarists and singers. It is difficult to stand out in such a talented group.

I practice diligently and work hard to keep my act fresh and entertaining. That hard work, combined with my knowledge and love of popular music, has helped me develop a repertoire of popular music from a variety of genres and eras.

That work and knowledge has allowed me to gain the experience of over 1500 performances in numerous venues as well as many private engagements. That experience was extremely helpful in the continuous development of my play list.

A few questions Dennis is frequently asked:

Q: How do you choose what songs to play?

A: Many of the songs I play are long-time favorites of mine. People occasionally request or suggest a song that is not in my current repertoire and that prompts me to learn the song. Other songs I learn after hearing them on the radio or elsewhere.

Q: Why do you use so many guitars?

A: Typically, I have at least two guitars when performing. One reason for having more than one guitar is simple, things break and there’s an old say, “The show must go on.” Like my guitars, I have back-up plans for all of my equipment. When time and space allow, I often bring several other guitars. Each guitar brings some different sound quality to the music and adds to the performance.

Q: You have a lot of Alvarez guitars, why?

A: Alvarez makes some quality guitars that work well in live performances. One of the earliest guitars I owned was an Alvarez and I found it to be a well-made, good-sounding and durable guitar that was reasonably priced. Over the years I have owned dozens of guitars and some were very expensive highly regarded brands. The Alvarez guitars stack up very week against some of the best guitars I have owned and played. Additionally,  Alvarez guitars, founded in 1965,  have their roots here in Saint Louis. Their offices are here and over the years I have come to know the company, some of their employees and their products. It’s hard to find a better value in guitars and I feel like I am contributing to a local business.

Q: You seem to have quite a bit of gear, how loud do you play?

A: It is important to have the ability to play with clarity at volume levels appropriate for each situation, and that venue managers prefer.  The equipment I use was specifically selected to allow me to play with clarity at low to moderate levels in smaller settings or expand the system to play much larger venues.
